Philosophy and Therapeutic Approaches

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a widely-used and evidence-based form of psychotherapy that focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors. It is based on the concept that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected, and that changing negative thoughts and maladaptive behaviors can lead to improvements in emotional well-being and functioning. In addition to the cognitive and behavioral interventions, CBT also utilizes psychoeducation and skill building.

Behavioral interventions in therapy are techniques used to modify maladaptive behaviors and encourage positive behavior change. These interventions are based on principles of behaviorism, which emphasize the role of learning and conditioning in shaping behavior. A few examples might include positive and negative reinforcement, consequences, modeling and social skills training. Behavioral interventions in therapy offer a range of techniques to modify maladaptive behaviors and promote positive change. By focusing on observable behaviors and the environmental factors that influence them, these interventions provide practical and effective solutions for a variety of psychological and behavioral issues. These strategies are widely used in treating conditions such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, and various other mental health concerns.

Activity therapy, also known as recreational therapy or therapeutic recreation, is a form of therapy that uses engaging activities to improve the physical, emotional, social, and cognitive well-being of individuals. It is often used in various healthcare settings, including hospitals, rehabilitation centers, long-term care facilities, mental health settings and community-based programs. The activities are tailored to the individual’s needs and interests and are designed to enhance their quality of life and overall functioning.

Background

I hold my Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Oakland University and my Master’s Degree in Clinical Social Work from Madonna University. Since obtaining my degrees, I have worked in a variety of different positions including hospital emergency rooms and inpatient psychiatric units. Most recently, just before beginning my therapy career, I worked as a school social worker with elementary aged children. This has given me the knowledge and expertise to better understand and help manage academic related stressors, school-based anxiety and depression, behavioral issues and advocating on behalf of the child in need.
